System Smash
(2026)
The golden era of Berlin subway writing 2018–2021. one of the most intense and visible periods in European train writing.
Thousands of painted trains remained in regular service for months on end – an exceptional situation fuelled by factors such as strikes, lockdowns and a shortage of rolling stock, and one that remains unique to Berlin in this form.
Over 500 photographs by Peter Stelzig show not only classic pieces, but also, across various chapters, how they changed over weeks and months. All the photographs are by Peter Stelzig, who systematically documented the scene over the years, building up an extraordinary archive of tens of thousands of images. The book is complemented by texts and perspectives from the scene, as well as a rare insight from a tube driver.
System Smash reveals the pieces and background stories, which contextualised by contributions from the following authors: Denk, Georg Zolchow, Joys, Lion, Mr. Tee, Peter Stelzig, Revoltecrew, Sieger, Stel.
