In 1989 as the last fleet of Subway Cars covered in Graffiti were pulled out of service a new movement began to gather momentum in the streets. The era of the "Production Wall" was upon us and SMITH camera in hand was there documenting them as they popped up weekly. Living in Washington Heights, a lot of walks were taken through the Bronx searching out new productions and old tags, and eventually Queens, and a few in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Illegal or legal there was an energy to these productions, especially if you stumble upon them in progress. I've seen few things as entertaining as a group of writers hanging out and just painting a wall together. The jokes, the stories and well you probably know the deal. This book captures the results of that energy and provides an archive of images and insight into our Modern Graffiti history, most of which is long gone from the walls.
