Vandalisme
(2025)

Vandalisme represents an extension of Paris Tonkar, a sort of volume 2, which delves into the early years of graffiti vandalism in Paris (1984-1996).

In the 1980s-1990s, graffiti was widely regarded as a visual nuisance, often equated with an illegal act severely repressed by the authorities. Yet many of the major figures in contemporary urban art began their careers as “vandals”, evolving in the shadows of subways, streets and railroads, armed with cans of paint and a fierce determination to make their mark on public space.

This book immerses us in this seminal era, with never-before-seen photographs by Tarek, hard-hitting anecdotes and portraits of emblematic graffiti artists. It sheds light on the bridges that enabled some to move from illegality to artistic recognition, from wild tagging to institutionalized walls, and even to gallery canvas.

An essential work for understanding the evolution of graffiti in France, from transgression to legitimization.
